  • Vitamin B12 deficiency is treated with Vitamin B12 supplements. When the deficiency of this vitamin is overcome, the body starts producing more red blood cells and there will be no more symptoms.
  • Vitamin B12 can be given to patient in the form of intramuscular injections. The vitamin inputted into the human body is refilled in the liver with 6 or 7 injections in first few weeks of treatment and then level of this vitamin in the liver is maintained with monthly or quarterly injections throughout the patient’s life.
  • The best sources of B12 are from animal or poultry based foods including fortified cereals, fish, eggs, meat and dairy products.
  • Vegetarians especially face the deficiency of vitamin B12. Vegetables can’t provide this vitamin so they have to take Vitamin B12 supplements separately.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency is treated sometimes with Vitamin B12 nasal spray but this method costs more than other supplement methods such as pills or injections.
  • Certain steps can be taken at home to reduce deficiency issues of this vitamin. One may consume cheese, eggs, meat, milk and other dairy products that have good source of this vitamin.
  • Foods that contain folic acid (another type of vitamin) can help to reduce the deficiency of vitamin B12. Folic acid is found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and fortified cereals.
