The Health Benefits of Echinacea: Activating Your Immune System

We live in a world of bacteria and germs, microscopic organisms that you can’t see but come into contact with everyday by way of many carriers; human and non-human and it is putting your health at risk. Your body’s front line defense is called the “immune system” and it is continually in battle to keep you healthy and free of disease and infection.

We live an unhealthy lifestyle of too much stress, unhealthy diets, exposure to chemicals and toxins and the smoking gun “cigarettes.” These elements are weakening our immune system and it now needs a boost every now and again.

One of the most researched and powerful stimulants that can boost your immune system on virtually every level is the purple coneflower (Echinacea,) a hardy herbaceous flowering perennial found in eastern and central America,

The purple Coneflower (Echinacea) is popular in the United Sates as a treatment used to prevent and treat the common cold, influenza and infections. Echinacea may also help fight off urinary tract infections, herpes, ear infections, strep throat, staph infections and   bronchitis. It is recommended for those suffering with chronic respiratory infections and patients with cancer. Drinking the Echinacea can heal joint and muscle issues as well as reduce inflammation.

You can also help to boost your immune system by starting with a healthy lifestyle; reducing your stress, getting a good night’s sleep – at least 7 to 8 hours a night, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet with omega3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, selenium and zinc and by eating more fruits, grains, nuts and oats and drinking a cup of Echinacea Tea.

Echinacea Tea

  • 2 cups cold water
  • 1 teaspoon dried Echinacea fresh edible flower (or roots)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1 teaspoon honey

  1. Place the Echinacea leaves and ginger in a teapot and pour 2 cups of boiling water over the leaves.
  2. Cover and steep for 10-15 minutes.  Strain into tea cups.
  3. Add lemon juice and honey and stir to blend.

Drinking Echinacea Tea has many known health benefits and can help boost your immune system. Be advised that people suffering with diseases, such as HIV or AIDS, tuberculosis or multiple sclerosis, using Echinacea can irritate these diseases by making their symptoms worse. Check with your health care practitioner first before using Echinacea in any form.
